Follow these instructions for easy installation of
Wedge chuck Mechanism NP-100-R

Remove:
a. 4th position cam
b. tool spindle cam carrier
c. front cam carrier
Adjust the chuck closing block P/N 5139-2
a. Loosen the top bolt P/N 837 of the chuck closing
lever P/N 5139-1 approximately 2 turns.
b. Tighten the bottom bolt P/N 837 of the chuck
closing lever.
Remove:
a. feed tubes
b. spindle drive gear from spindle change gear stud
P/N 626-A-1 (to prevent spindle rotation)
c. spindle collets
d. existing chucks or fulcrums
Loosen inner spindle thrust nut (left hand thread)
P/N 5080-2221. DO NOT REMOVE IT.
Remove:
a. ball retainer nut P/N 5080-390
b. inner spindles
  NOTE: THE NP-100-A WEDGE CAN BE USED WITH EITHER
  2 EXTENSION OR 3 EXTENSION INNER SPINDLES
c. the 4th position stationary head, tooling and spindle
d. 15 spindle gear screws P/N 767 or set screws P/N
  1263-93
e. outer spindles
  -number each spindle so it can be returned to proper
  spindle front bearing housing P/N MH-100,
  if the spindles are not worn out
f. clean outer spindles
Examine back end of the outer spindles for wear caused
by extensions.
a. If the wear is greater than 0.002" deep, grind back
  end of the outer spindle until it is square and has no wear
  marks. Rebuilt spindles may also need to be ground
  NOTE: FAILURE TO PERFORM THIS OPERATION WILL
  RESULT IN IMPROPER MATING BETWEEN NEW
  SHORT EXTENSION P/N MB-635-13 & THE
  OUTER SPINDLE, CAUSING THE WEDGE CHUCK
  NP-100-A TO NEED FREQUENT ADJUSTMENTS.
To install new or rebuilt spindles:
a. loosen & unscrew central nut of the tool post stop
   P/N 2186
b. this step applies only to machines with spindle
  stopping attachments P/N 2496-5-SA or spindle
  aligning gears P/N 1263-132-SA
For easier reassembling, mark the tool post stop and face
of the head Casting for alignment.
Remove:
a. 5 socket head cap screws P/N 843-a
b. tool post stop assembly
c. spindle front bearing nuts P/N MH-100-3
d. spindle front bearing housings P/N MH-100
Check spindle front bearing housing lubrication holes
for obstruction.
Reassemble machine in REVERSE ORDER.
a. leave out 15 spindle gear screws (step 5d)
b. replace fulcrum extensions P/N 5080-2217 with new
wedge chuck short extensions P/N MB-635-13
Install and Tighten:
a. inner spindles
b. inner spindle thrust nut (left hand tread) and
  ball retainer nut (right hand thread)
c. 15 spindle gear screws or set screws
  NOTE: BE SURE OUTER SPINDLE MOVES FREELY OVER INNER
  SPINDLE AFTER TIGHTENING.
Replace spindle collets
Put wedge chuck mechanism into chuck slide P/N 328
a. slide it on to machine
b. be careful not to push out key P/N NP-100-4 from
wedge chuck
c. put fiber washer P/N 911 on back end of spindle and adjust nuts
Replace assembly socket head cap screw P/N NP-510
in wedge chuck with the enclosed plug screw P/N NP-500
Replace feed tubes and stock up the machine
BEFORE OPERATING THE MACHINE:
a. Be sure the chuck slide roll & pin clear the chuck
  closing lever P/N 5139-1
b. IF ON INDEX, CHUCK SLIDE ROLL & PIN HIT CHUCK
  CLOSING LEVER
  1. remove the chuck closing lever
  2. machine (remove material from) the chuck closing lever until it
     clears the chuck slide roll & pin.
Adjust:
a. collet tension
  - same as with fulcrums
b. CAUTION, a slight turn of the adjusting nut
  changes the collet tension dramatically
c. Explain to machine operator about dramatic
  adjustment
d. chuck closing block
  1. open all five wedge chucks approx. 3/32 (.093) in, (2mm)
  2. let the machine index in JOG
  3. tighten chuck closing block until all five chucks are closed
    (same as running fulcrums)
  4. IF EXCESS VARIATION IN GAP BETWEEN OUTER
     HOUSING P/N NP-100-2 AND PRESSURE COLLAR P/N
    NP-100-5 (MAXIMUM GAP = 0.010 INCH / .25 MM)
      -exchange/ replace chuck slides
      -all wedge chucks should close the same amount
      -THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR LONG LIFE

WARNING TO ALL USERS OF THE NP-100 WEDGE CHUCKING
MECHANISM FOR THE WORK AND BURRING SPINDLES.

The NEW STYLE DAVENPORT® CHUCK ADJUSTING NUT,

641-2 for standard and oversize Davenport® Automatics MAY CAUSE
SEVER DAMAGE TO THE WEDGE CHUCKING SYSTEM.

New style chuck adjusting nuts have a tendency to
self-tighten wile the machine is running. This causes excessive
closing pressure in the chucking system.

We do not recommend the use of this style chuck adjusting
nut.

We recommend the old style chuck adjusting nuts P/N 641 and
the chuck adjusting nut washer P/N 897 system. It can
be locked more tightly and does not have a tenancy to
self tighten.
